Back To School Christian Mom Morning Routine

Are the kids going back to school and you want to get back into a good morning routine? I’m here to give you some ideas to help get you started with your own routine!

Before we start though, I want to clarify that I’m not going to be including a schedule here. The key to a routine is to follow an order of practices rather than a set schedule. This is because schedules vary a lot from individual to individual and family to family.

Another thing to note is that while this routine includes several elements that are helpful in my own morning routine, these can easily be adapted to your own needs. For instance, you may not have the time to include an exercise slot in your morning routine. And so in step 2, you may just stretch your legs and neck for a minute or two, before going forward to step 3.

In general terms my morning routine includes these four main areas:

  1. Movement – especially important after 7/8 hours in bed;
  2. Hydration – this essential after not drinking for the whole night;
  3. Light exposure – this regulates circadian rhythms for the day ahead;
  4. Scripture meditation and prayer time – as a Jesus follower, focusing on Him early in the morning helps me go back to Him throughout the day.

So let’s get into the details:

Christian Mom School Morning Routine

1.Get up and drink water

When I wake up, I always get up straight away because my alarm is on my phone, which is in the en-suite bathroom. (I deliberately put my phone there, so it doesn’t distract me before bed, which is my reading time.)

After turning the alarm off and going to the toilet, I drink a tall glass of water and open the bedroom blind and window to let in the fresh morning air.

2. Make a cup of tea and exercise

The next thing I like to do is to go downstairs, make a cup of tea – usually hot lemon water – and then do some light stretching exercises. After stretching, I do sit-ups and squats, and sometimes a quick run around the living room!

I typically exercise for fifteen minutes before going on to the next part of my routine.

3. Pray, read Scripture, meditate

This is my favourite part of my morning routine!

I get the cup of tea that I made and left to cool while I exercised and I sit down with my Bible, journal, and pen. (Sometimes my cat joins me and sits on my lap while I read, pray and attempt to write!)

I like doing my quiet time in an armchair near a window in the living room, because looking at nature helps me pray, praise God, and meditate on what I’m hearing from Him.

I’ve recently begun praying the Psalms out loud, and that’s been helpful in my prayers to God.

Some days I listen to the audio Bible and look out of the window as I’m listening.

4. Water plants outside

In the spring and summer months, I usually water the plants on the patio early in the morning. The purpose is twofold. First, so that I don’t forget (haha) and second because I love getting out into nature and enjoying the morning light as part of my morning routine.

5. Shower, prep school bags, and coffee!

After watering the plants, I often have around 10 to 15 minutes to get showered and dressed before I need to wake my kids for school.

After I’m dressed, I wake my kids with lots of cuddles and go downstairs with them so they can start having their breakfast (usually cereal) and I can prepare their school snack bags. (I like doing this in the morning, because sometimes they have fresh bread and cheese, or yoghurt for snack, and so I want everything to be fresh.)

After I’ve prepared their bags, I’ll either join them and eat breakfast, or just drink coffee, depending on whether I’m doing intermittent fasting that day. I always have coffee, though!

6. Make-up and hair

After the kids have had their breakfast, they go up and brush their teeth and get dressed and I go upstairs and do my make-up.

This usually only takes around five minutes, as I have a fast weekday routine. I apply sun cream, day cream, and a tinted BB cream on my face, and then I apply mascara and eyeliner to my eyes. Finally, I fill in my eyebrows with a brow pencil.

My hair routine is also super quick. On non-wash days, I just spray and brush my hair with a leave-in conditioner. On wash days, I also spray and brush my hair with conditioner and then I do a quick blow dry. If I’m doing something special that day, I’ll begin my routine earlier and straighten my hair.

7. Make beds

The final step of my morning routine is to make my bed. I do this as the last step of my routine, as I think it’s important to let the bed air out before making it.

After making my bed, I help my kids with their last-minute prep for school. Most of the time, this is just a case of reminding them to make their beds, or to brush their hair. In the summer, it often includes helping them with applying sunscreen.

And then…we’re ready for the day!
