May The Favour Of The Lord Rest On Us

From The Holy Grind Devotional Series

Today I’m sharing devotion number four in the Holy Grind Devotional Series: May The Favour Of The Lord Rest On Us.

In this devotion, I share about how we can ask for God’s blessing on our work when it’s His will.

May The Favour Of The Lord Rest On Us – S4 E4

Focus Verse

May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us—yes, establish the work of our hands.-  Psalm 90:17

Work is a gift from God and as Jesus followers, I believe God will use our work to help us grow in patience, diligence, and learning. However, I believe that we can also experience special favour in our work when we submit it to God.

Like the psalmist, we can ask God to establish the work of our hands. Now, to establish means “to start something that will last for a long time, or to create or set something in a particular way”. If we want our work to endure the test of time, and to bear fruit, this is then what we must do, and it is very simple: ask God for favour in the work we do.

Yet, there is a caveat. We cannot simply work, ask for God’s blessing, and expect Him to give it to us.

First, we must make sure that the work we are doing is according to God’s plans for us. To give a concrete example, when my daughter Abby was one, I started doing several freelance teaching and translation projects while I was at home with her full-time. While some projects were manageable and enjoyable, others became stressful and took my focus away from raising my daughter.

Over time, God showed me to stop doing them. Would I still have gained some learning and experience in doing those projects? Yes. But I couldn’t expect God to give me favour and bless those projects when He’d shown me clearly it was His will for me to stop them.

And so, mama, I’d like to encourage you today in this too. Submit your work to God, and if it’s His will for you to do it, ask for His blessing. Then you can be sure of His answer.

Questions for reflection

– Is the work you are currently involved in according to God’s plans for your life?

– In what ways do you think God blesses our work?

Lord, I pray You would help us submit our work to You. Give us Your direction about whether we should continue with the work we’re doing, stop specific work, or start something new. I pray that You would guide us through Your word, other Christians and Your Spirit. Help us, Lord, to follow and submit to You. I pray for blessing over the work that’s Your will for us to do. Bless it, Lord; that we would see fruit and that it would endure the test of time. Amen.
