There’s A Time To Be Silent

From The Silence Is Golden Devotional Series

Today I’m sharing devotion number one in the Silence Is Golden Devotional Series: There’s A Time To Be Silent.

In this devotion, I share about how God wants us to be quiet before Him when we do so we will find true rest.

There’s A Time To Be Silent – S5 E1

Focus Verse

“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens: (…)  a time to be silent and a time to speak “ – Ecclesiastes 3:1, 7

Devotion

I don’t know if you can relate to this, but I feel the world is getting louder by the minute. In our entertainment-driven world, there seem to be more and more things calling for my attention. When I log onto Instagram, I’m bombarded with videos, photos, and music from different content creators. When I visit a website, I’m overwhelmed with a pop-up adverts and calls to action. When I go into a store, I’m surrounded by things that shout: buy me and you’ll be happier! Bright colours, loud sounds, flashing images greet me at every turn.

Yet, in the Bible, it’s clear that what we need most of all, is to be still in God’s presence. In fact, to truly rest, we need to get away from life’s distractions, and sit quietly in the presence of the God who created the Universe — the One who can truly give us peace and fulfilment.

So, mama, I’d like to encourage you to find a quiet moment each day and make a date with God. Don’t take your phone. Don’t listen to a podcast or a sermon. Simply sit at God’s feet with your Bible open and bring to Him prayers of praise, thanksgiving, and repentance. Read His word and let it direct you as you pray. I can guarantee that this is where you will find peace, joy and rest.

Questions for reflection

– What things have taken your focus away from God recently (e.g. work, entertainment, problems)?

– What practical things can you do in order to create space and time for a quiet time with God?

Prayer

Lord, help me create a time and find a space to be quiet with You. Lord, forgive me for when I’ve allowed myself to be distracted by the constant noise around me. Help me put Your first, above all else. Help me know that it’s with You that I will find true joy and rest. Lord, I pray You would enable me by Your Spirit to live for Your Kingdom first. Amen!
