Each One Should Carry Their Own Load

From the Purposeful Work Devotional Series

Today I’m sharing devotion number two in the Purposeful Work Devotional Series: Each One Should Carry Their Own Load. This devotion is about how we don’t need to live under the burden of a responsibility that is not ours to bear.

Each One Should Carry Their Own Load – S6 E2

Focus verse

Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else, for each one should carry their own load. Galatians 6:4-5

Devotion

Purposeful work is about understanding the particular loads God has given us to carry and testing our work to see if we are being faithful stewards.

As Christian mums, our primary focus is God, then our husbands (if the case may be) and then our children. We also have homemaking duties and we may have work responsibilities or church ministry. These are all loads God wants us to carry.

He wants us to love and nurture our marriages and our children. To work faithfully. To be industrious with our responsibilities.

Yet, the world will often tell us that we need to hold all things together. The truth is we can’t. We are not meant to be God.

We are not meant to be saviours of our husband or our children. We cannot satisfy their every need. Or those of our other family members or friends.

God doesn’t want us to carry that pressure, because it’s not a load that is ours to carry! He is God. He alone can satisfy the deep yearnings of the people around us.

So as Christian mothers, it’s important we know which loads are ours to bear and which are not. When we do, we experience God’s peace as we ask Him for strength to fulfil the work He has set before us.

Questions for reflection

  • What loads have you been carrying which you know are not your responsibility?
  • Have you ever felt guilty for not being able to satisfy the needs of those around you? What truth brought forth in today’s devotion can help release you from that guilt?

Prayer

Lord God, I thank you that Your will is for me to work purposefully in the responsibilities that are mine to carry. Forgive me for when I’ve listened to the lies of the world and believed that I could or should satisfy the needs of others that can only be met in You. Empower me by Your Spirit to work faithfully in all that which you have given me to steward. In Jesus’ Name. Amen!
