Fighting The Good Fight

This is devotion number five in the Walking By Faith Devotional Series and today we’re looking at fighting the good fight of faith amidst trials. Today’s focus verse is from Paul’s second letter to Timothy (2 Timothy 4:7) in which Paul states his confidence in having finished the race and kept the faith.

Fighting The Good Fight

Focus verse

“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.” 2 Timothy 4:7

Devotion

Walking by faith is a fight. A fight against the flesh, the world, and the enemy. A fight that requires superhuman strength in moments of turmoil, pain, and darkness.

Since this fight requires superhuman strength, we can’t fight it alone; we need the One who has already overcome the world—Jesus. And when we surrender to Jesus, we can be certain of victory as we walk by faith. (1 John 5:4)

Walking by faith is then both a daily choice in the everyday circumstances of life, and a radical act of obedience and surrender in the moment of battle.

Let us then pray that, like Paul, we will persevere in the faith even when we have trials and tribulations of many kinds. Let us then ask God to empower us to walk by faith.

Questions For Reflection

  1. What situations have brought you discouragement recently?
  2. Meditate on the following verse “for everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith.” and ask God to empower you to walk by faith amid your trials.
  3. How can you encourage your children to walk by faith?

Prayer

Lord, empower me by Your Spirit to keep walking by faith, even when I’m in the midst of trials and tribulation. Thank You Lord for your promise of victory over the world as I walk by faith. May I honour You in all I do and not fall into sin or unbelief. Help me Lord to teach my children to walk by faith too. Amen!
