The Testing

Today I’m sharing a devotion for mothers based on James 1:2-3 about how God tests our faith in order to help us grow.

This should actually come as an encouragement to us, because it means God cares enough about our faith that He allows us to experience hard situations.

We must also remember that God doesn’t send us into hardships on our own. He is with us every step of the way.

Ok, so let’s look at today’s devotion.

The Testing

Focus verse

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds,  because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.

James 1:2-3

Devotion

God tests our faith so that we grow in perseverance and spiritual maturity.

When we experience trials, it doesn’t come naturally to think that they’re actually good for us. Yet, God’s word instructs us to rejoice because trials help us grow in perseverance and faith.

This week, I experienced a trial. When my eldest daughter was at school in the afternoon, she got dizzy and fell over. Because she couldn’t walk properly, I took her to the hospital.

It was hard: worrying about her, not knowing exactly what was causing the issue, waiting for hours, not getting much support or information from the nurses.

In the end, we discovered that her condition wasn’t serious, and it was a side effect from a cold virus.

Although it was hard for me and her, the doctor who diagnosed my daughter was supportive. Although we waited for hours with little information, my daughter and I got a chance to talk and pray together. And although I was worried, I also felt at peace, knowing God was in control.

So mama, whatever trials you’re going through today, please remember that God is allowing them in order to test and grow your faith.

Trust Him to give you the grace you need when you need it. Trust Him to deliver you from the trial at the right time. May His peace be with you.

Questions for reflection

  • Think back on a time you experienced a trial that helped you grow in faith.
  • What Bible verses help you when you’re experiencing a trial? How could you share these with your children when they also experience struggles?

Prayer

Lord, I don’t always understand why I experience trials and I don’t like going through them. But Your word tells me to rejoice because trials will help me grow in faith.

Thank You, Lord, for that. Give me grace as I experience hardships. Please fill me with your peace. May I honour You and share Your love with others. And at the right time, please deliver me from these trials. Amen!
