From The Holy Grind Devotional Series

Today I’m sharing devotion number six in the Holy Grind Devotional Series: He Who Follows Worthless Pursuits Lacks Sense.

In this devotion, I share about how God wants us to be faithful stewards, and not go after worthless pursuits.

He Who Follows Worthless Pursuits Lacks Sense – S4 E6

Focus Verse

Whoever works his land will have plenty of bread, but he who follows worthless pursuits lacks sense. Proverbs 12:11

Devotion

God is looking for faithfulness in the work He has given to us. That we work with all our hearts in that which is His will for us. It’s interesting that in this verse, there’s a contrast between faithful working of that which is ours to steward, and worthless pursuits.

When you think of worthless pursuits what comes to mind?  I think of pyramid schemes and poor business investments. I also think of young people whose sole purpose in life is to become TikTok influencers and get bucket loads of money.

The common thing about all these is that while there are some who succeed in these pursuits (and that’s not everyone!), this often comes at the cost of time, money, and mental health. The very pursuits that were supposed to liberate, actually did nothing more but enslave those who gave their life to them.

God is looking for faithful stewardship of the responsibilites He has given to us

I recently read a report about some of the top TikTok influencers in America which reported that all of them lived with chronic anxiety. Their livelihoods were based on fickle algorithms and their ability to be interesting forever.

God gives us an alternative: faithful Godly work. When I think of my own areas of work, I think of the importance of excelling in my job as a teacher, improving my writing to serve my readers well, growing deeper in God’s word, looking after my home with diligence, and taking care of my children with all my heart. That’s faithful stewardship.

Questions for reflection

  • Can you think of other examples of worthless pursuits?
  • What does faithful stewardship look like to you, mama?
  • How can you teach your children faithful stewardship?

Prayer

Lord, I pray we would be faithful stewards of all that is Your will for us to do. I pray we would raise our children in Your ways, that we would teach them the Gospel, and teach them to have a relationship with You. Help us to be faithful stewards of our marriages, homes, relationships, and work. Show us if we’ve been following worthless pursuits, and give us Your grace so we can repent and change our ways. Amen!
