Take Every Thought Captive!

This is devotion number six in the Walking By Faith Devotional Series: Take Every Thought Captive. And today we’re looking at taking our thoughts captive to make them obedient to Christ.

Walking By Faith – Take Every Thought Captive

Focus verse

“We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” 2 Corinthians 10:5

Devotion

Does it seem like there’s a war in your mind sometimes? That’s because it’s true, we are at war.

Yet, this war is not against flesh and blood, but against principalities and powers. In his second letter to the Corinthian church, Paul says that we don’t wage war as the world does with earthly weapons. Rather, our weapons have power to demolish strongholds. (2 Corinthians 10:4) Then in the next verse we find out what those strongholds are: arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God. After this, we’re given the solution to this war for our minds: take every thought captive in obedience to Christ.

In other words, when our minds are at war, it’s because the powers of darkness use arguments and pretensions against God to build strongholds in our minds. And the way we can demolish these arguments and pretensions is to take captive our every thought and make it obedient to Jesus.

When we do this, we’re set free from these strongholds and we grow in our walk with God. So walking by faith is not just about growing in the knowledge of God’s word, but it’s also applying it to our minds every time we need to take all wrong thoughts captive.

Questions for reflection

  1. What thoughts have you had recently that you know are against God and stop you from walking by faith?
  2. How can you take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ?

Prayer

Lord God, thank You for Your truth, which sets me free. Lord, I pray for you to fill me with your Spirit and help me take captive every thought and argument that goes against You. May I believe in Your truth, instead. May I walk by faith by Your power. Amen!
